Menu bar and notifications

The bat in the menu bar, what its menu offers, and when doze sends a notification.

On this page

Run doze from the menu bar with the window closed, and know when something needs you.

doze puts a bat in the menu bar. It stays when you close the window (⌘W), so stacks are a click away without the window. The bat never shows a number. When something is broken it gets a red dot; hover it for a line such as doze · 13 awake.

On Linux the bat lives in the system tray, which needs AppIndicator support; the deb and rpm packages recommend it.

From the top:

  • Needs you, only when something is broken: up to three items, newest first. Each opens to say what is wrong, with its fix and Show in doze. A last line counts the things worth doing and opens the bell’s panel.
  • Stacks: one line per stack. ● is running, ○ stopped, ⚠ in trouble. The line under the name says how it is: 13 awake · 1 dozing · 536 MB, up 3d ago, or the service that is in trouble and why. Running stacks come first; past eight running or five stopped, the rest are under More stacks. A stack in trouble is always listed.
  • Open doze (⌘⇧D), Settings… (⌘,), Check for Updates…
  • Quit doze · stacks keep running.

Each stack’s line opens a submenu of what fits its state:

Running stack Stopped stack
Open in doze Open in doze
Open its web address, when it has an app with one Up as last time
Sleep everything Up everything
Restart
Down

When starting a stopped stack would run into something, such as a port another process holds, the window opens on the stack to ask first.

  1. Open Settings (⌘,).
  2. Under Startup, turn on Open at login, in the menu bar only. At login the bat appears and the window does not.
  3. Optionally, turn on Reopen the page I had, when the window opens, to come back where you left off.

doze sends a system notification for three things only:

  • a crash: orders crashed · larder, with the error and the try it is on, such as try 3 of 5 · next in 4s;
  • a failed task: its exit code, and that nothing retries it;
  • a service that never became ready, with a pointer to its ready check.

It says each once per episode: a service crashing five times in a row is one notification. It says nothing about what is already on screen, and nothing about what was already broken when the app opened.

Click a notification to open the window on that service. When the item has a fix the app can apply, such as stopping a process that holds a port, the notification carries it as a button.

The first time, the system asks whether doze may send notifications. You can change the answer later in the system’s own notification settings.
